All bodily functions are powered by the release of chemical energy through the process of controlled oxidation. Most of this metabolism, which produces over 50 kilos of energy (ATP) per day, is done in the mitochondria and the liver – this metabolism produces most of the oxidative stress which results from free radical production primarily responsible for the inflammation and aging (rusting) of our bodies. It is critical that we protect our mitochondrial function from injury due to high sugar intake, heavy metals, hormonal and nutritional deficiencies. Oxidative stress also impairs nitric oxide (NO) and causes endothelial dysfunction.
Fructose (HFCS in sodas and fructose in juices) is seven times more likely to cause AGE’s than glucose. Fructose is metabolized differently from glucose and goes straight to the liver and turns into fat (trigylcerides) almost immediately. “When you consume fructose, you are not consuming sugar, says Robert Lustig. High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) which became widely used beginning in the 1980’s is toxic to our blood vessels not only raising our blood sugar but for increasing LDL-cholesterol and triglycerides.
High blood sugar causes the lining cells of the arteries to be inflamed, changes LDL cholesterol, and causes sugar to be attached to a variety of proteins, which changes their normal functions and ages our skin.
