Recent research shows that inflammation begins in the gut, primarily due to the modern Western diet, especially from sugar and gluten. The gut biome consists of more than 100 trillion "bugs", many times more than the number of cells in our body. The cell is the basic unit of life and its fuel comes from the food you eat.

There are over 140 different types of autoimmune diseases. The root cause of all of these is the loss of tolerance to "self" in the body, and the attack of the immune cells on "self". Studies have shown that diet, toxins, stress and activity levels account for 70-95% of the risk of autoimmune disease (and most other chronic disease) We now know that there are many factors that increase the reactivity of the immune cells and "leaky gut". These include the balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, antioxidants, the carbohydrate content of the diet, food intolerances, toxic load in the body, hormone levels and the presence of chronic infections. We have had great success in helping people with not only reversing diabetes but other autoimmune diseases, like Crohn’s and Multiple Sclerosis, shown to be due to a "leaky gut".

The diagnosis of being 'insulin resistant' is critical to understanding how we get fat and develop cardio-metabolic disease, diabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome etc. Every time you eat sugary food your insulin levels spike which results in a sharp drop in blood sugar. This triggers cravings for more sugar, which leads to another spike in insulin and so on. When this "up and down cycle" continues over time your cells lose their sensitivity to insulin and ever-increasing levels of insulin are needed to move glucose into cells. This is known as 'insulin resistance' and is the primary cause of cardio-metabolic disease.

Fructose is mainly metabolized in the liver (glucose is metabolized in all cells) and is thought to be primarily responsible for insulin resistance and is the major cause of (non-alcoholic) fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Bergamet, a natural product, has been shown to be the single best remedy to reduce NAFLD.
